The course presents an overview of the scope of contemporary pragmatics, covering key concepts and topics of pragmatic theory and practice that range from pragmalinguistics to sociopragmatic. The course topics include: (1) theoretical and conceptual foundations of pragmatics; (2) indexicality and reference; (3) speech acts and (in)directness; (4) Gricean pragmatics; (5) conversation analysis (private vs. institutional settings); (6) (im)politeness and conflict; (7) cross/intercultural pragmatics; (8) developmental and interlangauge pragmatics; (9) pragmatics and gender; (10) pragmatics and gesture; (11) pragmatics and discourse; and (12) methods and tools: approaching pragmatic data.
