In Hungary, the innovation-oriented sectors require more and more mathematically qualified professionals, but, no matter how much money there is for innovation, if the supply of specialists does not improve. Therefore, it is time to give mathematics a new image, for which a good basis is the fact that in developed countries it is no longer fashionable to be "stupid at math" since 90 percent of mathematicians land well-paying jobs.
The University of Szeged has been ranked 570th by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) in their latest World University Rankings for the Academic Year 2024-25. The institution has improved its position by more than 30 places compared to last year. The Ranking includes eleven Hungarian universities with very tight results among the front runners.
Katalin Karikó, research professor at the University of Szeged, has been appointed as a university professor. The decision was published in the latest issue of the Hungarian Official Journal Publisher (Magyar Közlöny).
Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman, i.e. the two Nobel Prize-winning scientists who pioneered the development of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19, and the Prime Minister of Barbados received the “Award for Global Health" founded by the Director-General of the WHO. The award ceremony was held in Geneva on the occasion of a joint event of the World Health Organization and the International Olympic Committee on May 27, 2024. The international award will be placed at the Karikó collection of the University of Szeged.
Shaanxi Normal University (SNNU) celebrates the 80th anniversary of its founding in autumn, to which the top management of the University of Szeged was invited. The university located in the former historical capital of China, Xian, was visited by the SZTE delegation on Friday, May 17, 2024. One of the bases of the relationship between the two institutions can be teacher training, similar research in the fields of natural sciences and education, and infrastructures that complement each other well.
In the first half of 2024, Belgium holds the presidency of the European Union, from which Hungary takes over the baton for the year's second half. One of the important events of the Belgian EU Presidency was the "Europe United Against Old and New Pandemics" conference held in Antwerp on May 14-15, to evaluate the EU's pandemic preparedness and determine future actions.
As we reported earlier, the delegation of the University of Szeged visited China and discussed the expansion of its international network. The new test station producing e-fuel is an important milestone in three objectives of the University of Szeged. After Katalin Karikó, the University of Szeged has another Nobel Prize-winning professor, Professor Gérard Mourou, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018 for his invention of chirped pulse amplification in the field of laser physics. On April 11, 2024, in the framework of a conference, in the presence of Professor László Rovó, rector of SZTE, and Minister of Culture and Innovation János Csák, Professor Mourou signed his research professor contract with the University of Szeged.
The possible areas of use of mRNA technology are wide-ranging: within a few years, it may even provide a therapeutic strategy that can be used in the case of cancer, cardiovascular, or autoimmune diseases. Several mRNA-based research projects are taking place at the University of Szeged with the support of Katalin Karikó, the first female Hungarian Nobel laureate. Among these, we present the research work carried out in the Laboratory of Neural Regeneration of SZTE SZAOK Department of Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology. The work of the researchers here can form the basis for treating spinal cord injury with mRNA therapy.
The University of Szeged, which has been Hungary's best university in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for years, was featured prominently in the recently published subjects list of the British ranking maker. Based on the results published on April 10, 2024, SZTE tied for first place in the field of pharmacy and pharmacology in Hungary. In addition, it was added to the list in some fields of science for the first time, while it maintains a stable position in several categories, both domestically and globally.
Katalin Karikó visited Szeged on April 16-17, 2024, for the first time after the 2023 Nobel ceremony held in Stockholm. The two-day visit included several programs – a celebratory senate meeting, an award ceremony, and a visit to the Botanical Garden, among others. During her visit, the alumna and research professor of the University of Szeged generously donated an authentic replica of her Nobel medal as well as the prize money that comes with the Nobel Prize to her alma mater.
From now on, the Nobel portrait plaque representing Katalin Karikó's Nobel Prize is on permanent display in the dedicated exhibition hall of the József Attila Study and Information Centre of SZTE. The Nobel Prize-winning professor of the University of Szeged announced at the welcoming ceremony on April 16, 2024 that she would donate the authentic replica of her 24-carat gold-plated Nobel medal to the university.
On the first day of her visit to Szeged, Katalin Karikó answered journalists' questions at the University of Szeged. The main focus of the interview was the Nobel Prize, which is on permanent exhibition at the József Attila Study and Information Centre, and the generous donation of five hundred thousand dollars that Dr. Karikó offered to inspire students and young researchers at the university. The discussion was moderated by Ilona Újszászi, the curator of the exhibition and a journalist with a long-standing, direct relationship with Katalin Karikó. Ilona Újszászi is also a member of the SZTE Directorate for International Affairs and Public Relations.
The management of the University of Szeged welcomed Katalin Karikó, research professor, who donated her Nobel Prize to her Alma Mater, at a gala dinner. The main patron of the event, Tamás Sulyok, President of Hungary, also attended the gala evening at the József Attila Study and Information Centre of the University of Szeged on 16 April. In his welcome speech, the head of state stressed that Katalin Karikó remained true to herself even after reaching the top of the world, returning to where she started from and taking responsibility for her country.
On April 16, 2024, Tuesday morning, Professor Dr. Katalin Karikó announced at the József Attila Department of Education and Information Center (TIK) of the University of Szeged that she has offered her Nobel Prize and the associated prize money of over half a million dollars to the University of Szeged. The US-based International Society of Dermatology commissioned Dr. Lajos Kemény, professor of dermatology and immunology at the Department of Dermatology of the University of Szeged, to be the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Dermatology. Editing this prestigious magazine means prominence in the profession. During its sixty-year history, the magazine's leadership moved from American universities to Europe for the first time. For the past 23 years, the editors-in-chief have been selected from the professors of the world-famous Mayo Clinic. The National Laboratory for Renewable Energy (NLRE) published an extract of the Carbon Dioxide Storage and Utilization (CCS/CCU) Options in Hungary White Paper in English.
The human brain consists of 86 billion neurons and the same number of non-neuronal cells. The research consortium Brain Initiative Cell Census Network (BICCN), launched in 2017, set out to map the neurons of this biological system, compare them with the brains of nonhuman primates, examine the dynamics of brain development at the cellular level, as well as the functional analysis of human cell types. In the autumn of 2023, the giant project referred to as the Manhattan Plan for brain research published results that will determine the future research of the brain at the cellular level in selected publications in the journals Science, Science Advances, and Science Translational Medicine.
Among the lead authors of 3 of the 24 articles in the Science compilation is Dr. Gábor Tamás, head of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences-University of Szeged Brain Neuron Networks Research Group, professor of neuroscience at SZTE, together with several fellow researchers from Szeged. Our conversation reveals where the evolutionary hotspots of the human brain are, what makes our brains human, what healing goals stimulate brain research, what advantages the diversity of connections in the human brain brings, and why it is worth sleeping in the afternoon during the exam period.

Enrolment to Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) continues to grow this semester: out of 780 applicants, 170 freshmen arrive to start their studies in Szeged in the AY 2016-2017.
QS University rankings EECA 2016 (the higher educational institutions of Emerging Europe and Central Asia) lists the University of Szeged as the 15th best university. According to the ranking, SZTE is one of the top 10% universities of the region and that the University of Szeged is also the best out of the four Hungarian universities listed among the top 30.

Since 19 December, 2015 the opening hours of the Klebelsberg Library and József Attila Study and Information Centre has changed. University of Szeged close its gates at 4 pm, December 23, 2015 and opening them at 8 am, January 4, 2016. The winter closure does not affect the buildings where health or public entities operate.
Anita Pelle, associate professor, the single holder of the Jean Monnet Chair title at the University of Szeged, studies the competitiveness of EU member states, leads a research group, organises a conference, and drafts study materials. Besides her scientific work, she also performs in private life: together with his husband, they care for three children. The young female associate professor also tells us that she loves to cook, likes gastro literature, and grows herbs on their terrace.

The ceremonial session of the Senate of the University of Szeged began at 11 o’ clock on Saturday, 7th November, in the ceremony hall of the Central Building of University.
QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) has published the latest ranking of universities in Emerging Europe and Central Asia (EECA) with the region’s top 150 universities on Wednesday 21st October 2015. It is an excellent result that the University of Szeged (USz) is ranked on the 13th place in this ranking. With this result USz has been in the top 10 percentage.
