Where people are happy, healthy, and become about 2 kgs heavier

International_Cultural_EveningOn Saturday, April 16th the international student body of Szeged held their 5th annual International Cultural Evening (ICE). Every year, the International Student Union of Szeged (ISUS), organizes this event with the help of the foreign students´ secretariat, the deans´ office of the medical faculty, and student representatives from countries around the world. Every year the event is full of fun, food, and dancing. However, the main feature of the night is always culture.

The night began for around 1500 guests with a short introduction by the president of ISUS, Deliah Bockemühl. After the pleasantries, the night kicked off in an explosive fashion. The crowd went wild for the 12 performances, which featured a variety of countries from across the globe. With incredible choreography from the Indians, a historic musical romp from the Germans, and subtly controlled chaos from the Japanese. Each participating country came out in full force and truly put on a memorable show.

Once the students felt that the audience was sufficiently starving, the food was served. 21 student led groups decorated booths to serve traditional dishes from their home countries. With food from Spain to Uganda, even the pickiest of eaters found something to their liking. In fact, they found many somethings. All in all, people left ICE happy, healthy, and about 2 kgs heavier.

The most incredible thing about the whole evening was that it was put on by students. Almost all of the food was made by students, and all of the performances were created and performed by students. Although they received help from the university, the secretariat, and various consulates, the event was imagined, organized and put on by students. This event stands as a testament to the quality and spirit of the student body here in Szeged.
