World-class medical operation was carried out at the clinic of the University of Szeged

Brilliant surgery was carried out at the Department of Oto-Rhin-Laryngology and Head-Neck Surgery of the University of Szeged. One and a half-year old deaf boy got an implant, which will help him to hear.

The fifty-minute operation was carried out by László Rovó, (professor of otorhinolaryngology and audiology). The implant was developed and produced by an Australian company. The essence of the procedure is that the cochlear implant is implanted under the scalp, and the associated electrode installs into the middle ear. The electrode cause electrical discharges, which reach the associated nerves and generate hearing: creating an auditory stimulus. The doctors checked the operation of the device during the surgery. However, the implant will be commissioned, when the tissue around it is completely recuperated. The implant is very good because it is specially designed for doctors to carry out the procedure quickly on an infant. The auditory pathway and auditory cortex have been developing simultaneously, and this allows the little boy to catch up with his teammates in a few years in hearing.
