Visiting university buildings remains prohibited for students of the SZTE, except for 6^th year medical, dentistry and pharmacy students who are carrying out their clinical practice as well as doctoral students for research purposes. With regard to the fulfillment of the practical courses and successful compilation of the exams, Deans may allow individual visits of the building at their discretion in compliance with the hygienic and protection measures required by law.

More than 30 research health and life science related projects have been initiated at the SZTE during the past two months to combat coronavirus. The University of Szeged participates a promising research to prepare the clinical testing of an antiviral treatment, furthermore the institution has launched a genetics research and is contributing to the development of mass testing methods for the novel coronavirus.

The University of Szeged is participating in a national screening study which involves tens of thousands of people, based on a representative sample. The series of studies aims to get an accurate picture of the extent of the epidemic and the actual number of people infected and re-infected with the coronavirus. Staff from the University collected 16.4 percent of the total national samples from Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Békés, Csongrád and Bács-Kiskun counties.

Within the pandemic schedule of the University of Szeged, as a next phase of the establishment of 1,100 hospital beds, 118 hospital beds have been installed at ELI-ALPS laser center. The halls of the center building in which patients in critical condition would be treated are equipped with special filtering apparatus. Preparatory steps has also been taken to build a container basis to operate the allocated pandemic treatment center.

Researchers from Szeged has also submitted their application as a member of the international EUGLOH group for the #EUvsVIRUS challenge hackathon organized by the European Commission.

The University of Szeged is ranked among the best 200 universities in the world in the latest Times Higher Education ranking, which examined the higher education economy, social impact and responsibility of the institution. In the ranking which is based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nation, SZTE is the best Hungarian institution with the ranking 101–200th place.

In the state of the national health emergency, declared to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) - in order to protect the citizens of foreign countries, legally residing in Hungary - the Government of Hungary in it’s Goverment Decree 85/2020. (5^th of April) ordered the automatic prolongation of the documents entitling to reside in Hungary as follows.

The spread of COVID-19 in Europe, including Hungary as well, has urged the Government of Hungary to declare a state of emergency on the 11th of March and take all necessary precautions to protect the citizens of Hungary, minimize the number of infected people and slow down the spread of the coronavirus.

Besides national rankings focusing on student and teaching excellence, international rankings measuring academic activities are continuously classifying SZTE among the world’s prestigious universities. According to QS World University Rankings the SZTE is the best university in Hungary, and is among the world’s most elite universities in several subject rankings. On the national HVG ranking list, SZTE was listed the first in Hungary out of the capital.

Protective gears delivered from China were distributed to the University of Szeged. Surgical masks, protective coats, rapid tests were included in the consignment delivered by Waberer’s Ltd. on the 7th April 2020.

Protective gears necessary in preventing transmission of the coronavirus were distributed to the University of Szeged from the stocks of the National Healthcare Services Center on the 3rd April.

Between the 30^th March and 1^st April 2020, a virtual conference was held within the framework of the EUGLOH project. With regard to the COVID-19 outbreak, the annual meeting of the project was carried out exceptionally online.

A survey on voluntary services provided by the SZTE members is being conducted at the University of Szeged. Employees and students of the University are requested to submit their intention on voluntary services to be provided at Albert Szent-Györgyi Health Center in relation with tasks arising by virtue of the COVID-19 disease emergency.

Several misconceptions regarding the coronavirus outbreak have come to light and ‘simple methods’ to prevent disease are widely known. Here are 15 of them published by World Health Organization (WHO).

This is to inform the community of the University that resolutions on the current epidemic situation previously issued by the Management of the University of Szeged, circulars issued by the Coronavirus Operative Committee are still in force and remain therein until withdrawal.

Leaders of the University of Szeged informed the university citizens in a video about the measures taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus infection. Prof. Dr. Klára Gellén, Vice-Rector for Education highlighted the most important information on distance education while Prof. Dr. Csaba Lengyel, Chair of the Coronavirus Operative Committee introduced the changes affecting the Albert Szent-Györgyi Health Center. Dr. Judit Fendler, Chancellor of the University of Szeged, informed the university citizens on measures to be taken regarding employees.

Through Coursera for Campus and Coursera’s Coronavirus Response Initiative, University of Szeged students will gain free access to 3,800+ courses from the world’s top university and industry educators.

In accordance with the resolutions of the Ministry of Human Capacities of Hungary, an epidemic hospital and center has been established in the Western park of Albert Szent-Györgyi Healthcare Centre of the University of Szeged, widely known as Hospital no. II (II-es kórház), at 57 Kálvária sgt., Szeged.

In several Hungarian press agencies, information has come to light that I am one of the citizens of Szeged who became ill as a result of a new type of coronavirus infection. The news is true.

Application Information in Epidemic Times

In addition to the health student hotline launched on the 10th of March, a chatbot has also been launched to inform university students at the SZTE. On the University of Szeged Facebook page, Berci-bot provides information in Hungarian and English on distance education, graduation and dormitory placement.

Sixth year General Medicine students, as well as Dentistry and Pharmacy students may continue their clinical and professional practice during the period of general prohibition of practical trainings. Students participating in doctoral programmers and have completed the complex examination and students with a public servant status with the University may enter the buildings of the Institution for work purposes.

In order to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus disease, measures concerning employment have been introduced at the University of Szeged until further notice of the management.

With regard to the state of emergency ordered by the Government of Hungary on the 11^th March, the University of Szeged will switch to distance education on the 23^rd March until withdrawal, after the spring break. Posts in connection with distance education as well as useful tools illustrated with introductory videos have been published on the CooSpace information scenes.

The Ministry of Human Capacities of Hungary has ordered that all interventions not requiring immediate medical care shall be postponed from the 16^th March 2020 until the state of emergency is terminated. In order to implement the measure, the University of Szeged immediately took the necessary steps.

The areas affected as indicated on the website of the National Public Health Service of Hungary are: Italy, China, Iran, South Korea, Iran and Heinsberg district of Germany. Passengers arriving from the abovementioned areas showing symptoms of coronavirus shall be considered as suspicious/under investigation and the procedure of the National Public Health Service of Hungary shall be followed, including the application of quarantine and laboratory testing.

Missions to foreign countries – regardless of the destination – cannot be ordered or authorized, university citizens are advised to delay their private travels abroad and citizens of foreign countries are not allowed to reside on campus. According to the Government Decree, healthcare workers shall only be allowed to leave the territory of Hungary with the permission of the Minister responsible for the relevant sector.

In order to prevent the further spread of the virus, preventive and protective measures have been introduced at the University of Szeged. Organizing and hosting an event with more than 100 attendees indoors and more than 500 attendees outdoors is prohibited. The individual written (electronic) permission of the Coronavirus Operative Committee is necessary for the organization of events with 50-100 attendees indoors and 150-500 attendees outdoors.

An educational break has been ordered for the 12^th and 13^th March and the Spring Break period of the University will be between the 14^th of March 2020 (Saturday) and 22^nd of March 2020 (Sunday). The University of Szeged will switch to distance education until withdrawal. All university students of Hungarian citizenship is required to move out of university dormitories and return home by the 13^th of March.

In order to prevent the spread of the new Coronavirus, subject to the decision of the University’s maintainer – keeping in mind the personal safety of the students – the Rector ordered a rectorial (educational) break for the 12th and the 13th of March.

Crucial information and important measures concerning the coronavirus disease are now available 24/7 via a student information line from the 10th of March at the University of Szeged. Further measures have been introduced at the University of Szeged regarding the spread of the coronavirus originating from China. In order to protect the general health of the university community of 30,000 members, the Rector and Chancellor of the SZTE issued a circular calling upon members to refrain from work and attending lectures if returning from an area affected and travelling to such areas shall be avoided.

Summer and winter schools, guest lectures, student and faculty exchange become possible within the framework of the cooperation between the Faculty of Law and Political Science and the University Business Academy Novi Sad. The agreement was signed on the 13^th February 2020.

The Summer School on Image Processing will be held between July 9 and July 18 2020, in Szeged, Hungary. SSIP is organized annually for graduate and PhD students interested in image processing. Students and teachers are invited to participate from all over the world.

African students at the University of Szeged have come together to form an Association called “African Diaspora Union (ADU) Hungary”. The Union was officially established on the 5th of February, 2020 at the Union’s Inaugural General Meeting held at their university’s Faculty of Economics and Business Administration where the founding members unanimously adopted their Constitution. The Inaugural General Meeting was attended by the Director of International Affairs Dr. Ildikó Pusztai.

138 international students started their studies in the spring semester of the 2019/2020 academic year. 131 students arrived to the SZTE under the Erasmus+ program and 7 students under the Makovecz program. The integration of the students who hold a scholarship is assisted by the SZTE International Mobility Office of the Directorate for International and Public Relations between the 3^rd and the 5^th of February, 2020.

A new biobank building investment to be finished in spring 2020 will satisfy the biological sample storage capacity needs of the University. A fully robotised automatic sample container worth of 3 billion HUF will be placed in the building. Owing to this investment and the accession to Biobanking and BioMolecular Resources Research Infrastructure – European Research Infrastructure Consortium, one of the most important requirements of personalized medicine and of a more effective oncology research and other therapeutic developments will be fulfilled.

As a new level of Hungarian-Serbian relations, on 21^st of January 2020, a Cooperation Agreement concerning the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina was signed by the State Secretary for Health at the Ministry of Human Capacities and the Provincial Secretary for Healthcare in Vojvodina at the University of Szeged. On this significant occasion, the SZTE entered a strategic agreement, thus deepening its relations with the University of Novi Sad.

The University of Szeged joined the Demola International Innovation Network as the first university outside the capital, establishing it within the framework of its Virtus Enterprise Catalyst Program. The Demola Programme aims to create a young, open, multidisciplinary community that uses creative ideas and methods to solve real-world business challenges. University students are now expected to apply for the spring semester.

For two days, representatives of the universities of the European Alliance for Global Health will be making discussions at the University of Szeged. At the English-language conference, partners will describe tasks of each working packages and outline their future plans.
