The University of Szeged has pursued education, research, art, sustainability, healing, and social engagement to a remarkable extent in the last few decades. Nothing proves this more than the outstanding results the University achieved in national and international rankings.
The University of Szeged is featured on almost 20 world rankings among the top institutions of the world every year. We are proud that our University is one of the best universities in Hungary.
World University Rankings
According to the ARWU ranking of Shanghai Ranking, the University of Szeged qualifies as one of the best Hungarian universities taking up positions between 401st and 500th worldwide and the first position in Hungary. ARWU (or Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as Shanghai Ranking) uses six objective indicators to rank universities including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (30%), publication performance (40%), the number of highly cited scientific works (20%), and academic per capita performance of a university (10%). |

Sustainability Rankings
In the Sustainability Rankings of QS, the University of Szeged occupies occupies the sublime 2nd place in Hungary, the 154th position in Europe and the 325th globally.
QS Sustainability Rankings 2025 measures an institution’s ability to tackle environmental (45%), social (45%) and governance (10%) challenges. This year, 1744 institutions (among them 556 Europian ones) took part in the assessment. This means a considerable growth in the number of universities measured: the list of participants has been extended by 350 universities globally and by 60 universities on a European scale.
The University of Szeged was also granted a recognition award for Commitment to Sustainability.
According to the Times Higher Education sustainability ranking, the University of Szeged ranked 301-400th globally and shared 1st in Hungary. In almost all subcategories created alongside the Sustainable Development Goals, the University ranked among the top 3 (9 first, 5 second, and 2 third places – sometimes shared position with another university). On the list of “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”, the University ranked 43rd globally (the best result among Hungarian universities).
The THE Impact Rankings are the global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to see their economic and social impact, and their engagement.
According to the Indonesian UI Green Metric “green university ranking list", the University of Szeged is one of the “greenest” Hungarian university: it ranked 30th in Hungary and 77th globally. In the category of “Setting and Infrastructure”, it once again gained the position of the best Hungarian university, while it ranked first in the category of “Education and Research.”
The shortlist of the Universitas Indonesia has six categories: Setting and Infrastructure (15%), Energy and Climate Change (21%), Waste (18%), Water (10%), Transportation (18%), and Education and Research (18%).
THE Online Learning Rankings
The THE Online Learning Rankings is the first initiative to assess higher education institutions globally based on the means of online learning they provide. THE has grouped the institutions into three categories: gold, silver, and bronze. The University of Szeged, alone in Hungary, received a gold nomination.
In this pilot edition, THE used four pillars to measure the excellence of universities: resources, which measures the staff and resources devoted to online learning; engagement measuring the level of student engagement; outcomes, which measures student progression and whether they would recommend it to others; and environment, which tracks inclusion, diversity and support levels.

Subject Rankings
According to the League table of HVG, the University of Szeged is the best university in Hungary based on faculty quality. This year, some faculties of the University also gained positions: the Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical School, the Faculty of Science and Informatics, the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, the Faculty of Pharmacy, and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration all ranked better compared to last years' results.
