Moving to a new country is an exciting adventure, but it can also be physically and mentally demanding. New surroundings, different weather, travel, jet lag, and the stress of settling into university life can temporarily weaken your immune system. A little preparation before you leave home can help you stay healthy and enjoy the beginning of your studies in Hungary.
Make sure you have valid health insurance from the day you arrive in Hungary.
Although international students will become eligible for a health insurance scheme depending on their student status, the registration process takes time. It may take several weeks before your health insurance becomes active, so you should not rely on it immediately upon arrival.
For this reason, we strongly recommend purchasing private travel or health insurance in your home country that covers at least your first few weeks in Hungary.
Different categories of international students (such as scholarship holders, fee-paying students, exchange students, or students from EU/EEA countries) may be eligible for different types of health insurance during their studies.
We recommend scheduling a general medical check-up before your departure, especially if you have any existing medical conditions or have experienced recurring health issues in the past.
It is also advisable to have some basic laboratory tests (such as routine blood work) and a chest X-ray before traveling. These examinations can help identify any underlying health issues that may not yet be causing symptoms and are much easier to arrange before you leave your home country.
For most international students, no additional vaccinations are required to enter or study in Hungary. However, it is a good idea to ensure that your routine immunizations are up to date before traveling.
The following vaccinations are generally recommended:
If you take prescription medication regularly, make sure you bring enough to last for the first few months of your stay. Although many medications are available in Hungary, the exact brand, dosage, or active ingredient may differ from what you are used to. Some medicines may also require a Hungarian prescription.
Having a few basic health items with you can save you time and stress during your first days. Consider bringing:
Even though pandemic-related restrictions are no longer common, respiratory illnesses such as colds, influenza, and COVID-19 still circulate worldwide. Wearing a mask when you feel unwell or while visiting healthcare facilities is a considerate way to protect others.
Before your departure, we also recommend checking whether there are any current travel or public health requirements affecting international travelers.
Hungary has four distinct seasons, and the weather can change surprisingly quickly during autumn.
Although the academic year begins in September, temperatures may still reach 25-30°C or even higher on some days. If you plan to spend time outdoors during orientation or while exploring your new city, remember to:
By October, temperatures often drop significantly, especially in the mornings and evenings. Rainy and windy weather also becomes more frequent.
Be sure to pack:
Layered clothing is usually the best choice, as temperatures may vary considerably throughout the day.
If you develop persistent symptoms, high fever, severe pain, breathing difficulties, or any other concerning health problem, do not hesitate to seek medical attention. Keep your insurance documents easily accessible and familiarize yourself with the available healthcare options shortly after arrival.
We look forward to welcoming you to Hungary and wish you a healthy, enjoyable and successful start to your university journey!
