How to acquire your residence permit and how to request your Hungarian Tax ID number

After arriving in Hungary, you must legalize your stay according to your citizenship.

Non-EU/EEA students are required to apply for a residence permit.

EU/EEA students are required to obtain a registration certificate.

Hungarian Tax ID
Students receiving scholarships administered by the Tempus Public Foundation (e.g. the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship, Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship or SZTE Start Scholarship) are required to obtain a Hungarian Tax ID in order to open a Hungarian bank account and receive their scholarship payments.
When applying for a Tax ID, you will need your passport and an Active Student Status Form. If you do not yet have this certificate, you may present your university admission letter instead. However, bringing an Active Student Status Certificate is recommended, as it confirms that you are already enrolled as an active student at the university.
After applying, you will receive your Tax ID on an official paper document. Please keep this document in a safe place, as you may need it for various administrative procedures during your stay in Hungary.
