The University of Szeged continues to stand among the world’s top institutions in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject. Based on the latest global evaluation, it remains the only university in Hungary to make the list across all subject areas.

Released on January 22, 2025, the Times Higher Education (THE) subject rankings are based on criteria similar to those used in the overall world rankings. They employ 18 performance indicators grouped into five core pillars: teaching; research environment; research quality (encompassing research influence and citation impact); knowledge transfer (including income from industry partnerships and the number of patents); and international outlook. Each subject area is assessed using discipline-specific weightings.

As in previous years, the newly released subject rankings span 11 academic disciplines. The University of Szeged stands out as the only Hungarian institution featured in all of the excellence lists, making its debut this year in the rankings for Law, Engineering, and Social Sciences.

Among Hungarian universities, the University of Szeged secured a position in the top 3 in every subject area (often sharing placements with other institutions). It ranked first in Law; placed second in Arts and Humanities, Education Studies, Engineering, Life Sciences, and Psychology; and took third place in Business and Economics, Computer Science, Medical and Health, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences.

With nearly 3,000 institutions assessed worldwide, the list below highlights the University of Szeged’s international standing in Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings by Subject for 2025.

Additionally, in the recently launched Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, released in November 2024, the university emerged as Hungary’s highest-ranked institution, securing a spot among the world’s top 300 universities.
