The University of Szeged has pursued education, research, art, sustainability, healing, and social engagement to a remarkable extent in the last few decades. Nothing proves this more than the outstanding results the University achieved in national and international rankings.

According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), the University of Szeged qualifies as the best university in Hungary ranked 401-500 globally. ARWU (or Academic Ranking of World Universities), the world ranking of university excellence published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, uses six objective indicators to rank universities including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (30%), publication performance (40%), the number of highly cited scientific works (20%), and academic per capita performance of a university (10%). |

Sustainability Rankings
In the QS Sustainability Rankings, the University of Szeged is ranked 154th in Europe and the 325th globally.
QS Sustainability Rankings 2025 measures an institution’s ability to tackle environmental (45%), social (45%) and governance (10%) challenges. This year, 1744 institutions (among them 556 Europian ones) took part in the assessment. This means a considerable growth in the number of universities measured: the list of participants has been extended by 350 universities globally and by 60 universities on a European scale.
The University of Szeged was also granted a recognition award for Commitment to Sustainability.
According to the Times Higher Education's sustainability ranking, the University of Szeged ranked 301-400th globally, maintaining its shared first-place position in Hungary. In almost all the 17 subcategories created alongside the Sustainable Development Goals, the University is ranked among the top three nationally (achieving nine first places, six second places, and one third place – sometimes shared position with another university). Internationally, it was ranked in the global top 100 in two categories: 53rd in SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and 77th in SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
The THE Impact Rankings are the global performance tables that assess the economic and social impact of universities, as well as their institutional responsibility and engagement, based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations.
According to the Indonesian UI Green Metric “green university" ranking list, the University of Szeged is one of the greenest Hungarian universities: it is ranked 30th in Europe and 75th globally. In the “Setting and Infrastructure” category, it once again gained the position of the best Hungarian university, while it also ranked first in “Education and Research.”
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings has six categories: Setting and Infrastructure (15%), Energy and Climate Change (21%), Waste (18%), Water (10%), Transportation (18%), and Education and Research (18%).
THE Online Learning Rankings
The THE Online Learning Ranking evaluates the online education activities of higher education institutions globally. In 2024, institutions were classified into three categories: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The University of Szeged received the highest rating, Gold, and was the only institution in Hungary to achieve this distinction.
The THE Online Learning Rankings used four pillars to measure the excellence of universities: resources, measuring the staff and resources devoted to online learning; engagement, measuring the level of student engagement; outcomes, measuring student progression and whether they would recommend it to others; and environment, tracking inclusion, diversity and support levels.
Subject Rankings
According to the League table of HVG, the University of Szeged is the best university in Hungary based on faculty excellence. The University also achieved outstanding positions in other categories: it moved up two places to rank second in the overall education ranking, and placed fifth based on student excellence. The university also performed exceptionally well in the faculty excellence ranking: among all university faculties in Hungary, the Szent-Györgyi Albert Medical School (SZTE SZAOK) secured third place. Additionally, the Juhász Gyula Faculty of Education (SZTE JGYPK) was ranked as the best non-Budapest institution for the teacher training undergraduate program.
