Number of International Students Studying at the University of Szeged Exceeds 4,000

The number of international students of the University of Szeged is continuously rising. More than 4,000 students from 115 countries around the world are carrying out their studies at the SZTE. Compared to previous years the increase in the number in the headcount is significant in domestic relations.

Currently around 4,100 students are studying at the study programmes taught in Hungarian and other languages at the University of Szeged. The number of students was augmented by 400 students compared to last year, while the Academic Year 2017/2018 brought an additional increase of 500 students. The University of Szeged is growing in popularity amongst international students owing to, among others, 60 study programmes taught in a foreign language offered by the University, scholarship opportunities, high-quality student services and lively cultural life of Szeged. The city itself is also particularly attractive as Szeged is the safest town of Hungary. Compared to the capital of the country, housing expanses are lower and a great variety of discounts is available for university students. The attractiveness of the University is enhanced by the outstanding results obtained on global educational rankings: the University of Szeged was ranked between the 501-510th place on Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2020, which is the best among ranked Hungarian participants.

As in previous years, 1,267 students - most of international students - arrived from Serbia for the first semester of the Academic Year 2019/2020. Compared to last semester’s headcount an additional 200 Serbian students commenced their studies at the University of Szeged. More than 500 students came from Iran and the number of German students is significant as well - it is 420 at the moment. 150 students from Romania chose the SZTE and more than 100 students arrived from South Korea and China. The institution is popular among Azerbaijan, Japanese, Turkish, Mongolian and Syrian students. Even students of Venezuela, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe have heard about the good reputation of the University since the SZTE accepts students from these distant countries as well.

International students are applying for study programmes of 12 Faculties of the University of Szeged. In most cases, applicants are admitted to the Faculty of Medicine, with more than 1,400 students at the moment. The Faculty of Science and Informatics is also popular, more than 600 international students are educated there and 450 international students attend study programmes of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. 96% of international students are admitted to full-time study programmes.

Ferdous Rahman – Faculty of Law and Political Sciences

My name is Ferdous Rahman and I am from Bangladesh. I am pursuing doctoral studies at the Department of Private International Law at the Faculty of Law and Political Science under the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme. Currently I am in the first year of my four-year PhD programme. I came to know about SZTE while exploring for the Stipendium Hungaricum programme. Among the other available options, this was my first choice. Apart from its excellent ranking, I got my supervisor with similar research interest. The increasing number of international students gave me a comfort of having a cosmopolitan environment. After starting my studies here in September 2019, I am convinced that I could not expect more. For prospective students, I would advise that SZTE can be their next home as I got mine. Everyone here including the professors, the administrators, and the students are very friendly and helpful. They make studies a joyous journey instead of pile of classes and books. After my graduation, I will return to my home country. The knowledge and the experience that I have been receiving here will be a great resource for my academic career. I intend to continue my research further and expect to contribute to policy formulation at national and international level."

Ahmad Adha - Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

I am Ahmad Adha from Indonesia and currently a 3rd year student in Theoretical Linguistics PhD program. I chose the University of Szeged (SZTE) as my study destination because it is located in the center of the town and it is also the highest ranked university in Hungary. The university staff and the professors were very accommodating and understanding when I decided to change the program that suits my research topic. I am so glad that I can be a part of my current department, and of course SZTE, since it is also the Center of Pragmatic Research which aims to promote advanced linguistic pragmatic research with international collaborations. After graduating, I wish to continue to work in my academic field as a professor and a researcher. My advice for prospective SZTE students is to choose a university with a good academic reputation that fits their passion.
