One of the world’s most renowned higher education rankings providers, the UK-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), published its latest global list of top universities on June 19, 2025. The QS World University Rankings 2026 assessed nearly 8,500 institutions – almost 3,000 more than the previous year. Of these, 1,501 universities secured a place on the prestigious list of top institutions.
The University of Szeged remains firmly among the world’s elite, ranking 597th globally. Its strong performance is also reflected at the national level: a total of ten Hungarian universities were included in the rankings, with Szeged once again placing in the top tier – earning the third-highest position in Hungary.
Hungary’s top three institutions lead the field as a tightly ranked trio, all positioned between 550 and 600 globally. Their overall scores differ by just 0.4 to 0.7 points – a narrow margin that signals only slight differences in global standing, yet clearly sets them apart from the rest of the Hungarian universities.
This year’s global ranking is topped by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, followed by Imperial College London in the UK and Stanford University in the United States.
QS evaluates institutions across the following nine performance indicators to compile the World University Rankings:
