The Tropical Butterfly Garden is open to visitors again in the SZTE Botanic Garden. Opening hours: 9.00 AM -17.45 PM.
The gardens main attractions are the exotic butterflies, native to Central and South America, which make a long journey to Szeged. The animals are reared on butterfly farms in Costa Rica. The pupae, which arrive by air, are further developed in the pupae cupboard of the butterfly nursery. After 1-3 weeks, the butterflies emerge from the pupae attached with insect pins, which pump up their wings with body fluid and emerge into the open space of the foil tent in a few hours. The exotic plant environment is their ideal habitat, where they can move freely. Up to a dozen species of butterflies can be observed at the same time. Most of them are active especially in sunny weather, but in cloudy weather they prefer to rest with folded wings on the leaves and branches of plants.
