Barbara Oakley is a Professor of Engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Her work focuses on the complex relationship between neuroscience and social behaviour. She created and teaches Coursera – UC San Diego’s “Learning How to Learn,” one of the world’s most popular massive open online course with over three million registered students, along with other popular “Top MOOCs of All Time.” Barb is a New York Times best-selling author who has published in outlets as varied as th e Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times—her book A Mind for Numbers has sold over a million copies worldwide, translated into twenty languages. She is also a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

13:00 (CET) Learning How to Learn

Have an easy access to the invaluable learning techniques used by experts in art, music, literature, math, science, sports, and many other disciplines. Learn about the how the brain uses two very different learning modes and how it encapsulates (“chunks”) information. We’ll also cover illusions of learning, memory techniques, dealing with procrastination, and best practices shown by research to be most effective in helping you master tough subjects.

If you’re already an expert, this peep under the mental hood will give you ideas for: turbocharging successful learning, including counter-intuitive test-taking tips and insights that will help you make the best use of your time on homework and problem sets. 14:30 (CET) Digging Deeper into the Science of Learning

In this workshop for teachers and faculty, Dr. Barbara Oakley will delve deeply into what is meant, from a neuroscientific perspective, by the term “active learning.” We will also discuss why retrieval practice is invaluable in enhancing active learning; how practice lays in place a completely different set of neural links in long-term memory; the effect size of different instructional interventions; evolutionary primary versus evolutionary secondary material and their relationship with student-centered versus direct instruction; the role of learning individual facts in allowing the hippocampus (and students!) to develop a feel for overall patterns; and how to detect educational fads.

16:00 (CET) Lessons from the Trenches of Online Teaching in a Pandemic Era

The online world offers unique convenience and advantages for both students and professors—that is, if you can efficiently build engaging course materials. Join Barbara Oakley, experienced online and flipped class instructor of millions of students, as she walks you the practical “how-to’s” of teaching asynchronous classes that can energize both you and your students.

We’ll start by examining common mistakes in presenting online materials—as illustrated by a hilariously bad educational video—and then learn how to improve what you present. We’ll explore practical aspects of multimedia theory, top down versus bottom up attention, and the value of occasional humor. (And we’ll also show you how to supply those bits of humor even if you’re not funny). We’ll also explore inexpensive ways of making videos, as with Powerpoint’s “export” function and free screencasting software.

The value of simple greenscreen, finding low cost animations and videos, scripting (or not), sound, lights, gamification, organizing your course on your LMS, ideas to reduce proctoring costs—we’ll cover all this and more. Virtually everyone is teaching some or most of their coursework online now—which means you want to up your game to stay up with the competition.
