Times Higher Education released its latest subject rankings on January 21, 2026. Compiled using a methodology comparable to that of the overall world rankings, the subject lists assess institutions across 18 performance indicators grouped into five core areas. These cover the teaching and research environment, research quality – including research impact and citation metrics –, knowledge transfer (such as industry income and patents), and international outlook. Indicator weightings vary by discipline in order to reflect the distinct characteristics of each field. In total, rankings were published across 11 subject areas.
As the only university in Hungary to feature on every subject excellence list in 2026, SZTE achieved top-tier national placements across all disciplines, predominantly in shared positions. In Hungary-wide comparisons, SZTE finished joint first in Law; second in Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education Studies (including teacher training), Engineering, and Life Sciences; and third in Computer Science, Medical and Health, Physical Sciences, Psychology, and Social Sciences.

These results underscore the University of Szeged’s broad-based excellence across education, research, healthcare, and third mission activities. SZTE’s strength is further reflected in additional assessments by Times Higher Education: in the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, published in November 2025, the University once again ranked as Hungary’s leading institution, placing within the global top 350. SZTE also continues to perform strongly in THE’s Impact Rankings, where it is consistently listed among Hungary’s top universities for sustainability performance.
