There are few things more uplifting on a cold winter evening than settling down with a good read. The latest issue of SZEM (Szeged University Magazine) invites readers to immerse themselves in a curated selection of inspiring stories that highlight the excellence of the University of Szeged. From innovative achievements to the driving force shaping the future – the wonder of science – these narratives come together in a single, freshly released publication, now ready to be explored.

In the 2025 issue of SZEM, readers are introduced to the stories of the University of Szeged’s Széchenyi Prize-winning professors, András Varró and Ernő Duda, whose long-standing dedication to research and teaching has left a lasting imprint on Hungarian science. The magazine also offers an inside look at the developments behind the university’s Most Innovative University of the Year distinction, before concluding with a visually engaging timeline charting the institution’s key achievements over the past academic year.

SZTE’s sense of pride also extends to its growing international community. As the magazine highlights, the number of international students choosing the University of Szeged has increased by a quarter compared to the previous academic year – with around 1,500 students from 132 countries beginning their studies at the start of the fall semester.

Among the University of Szeged’s many success stories, readers will also gain insight into the human dimension behind two major medical breakthroughs. One article introduces 11-year-old Lóránd, who received the world’s first smart cochlear implant at the university. Another focuses on little Abigél, a baby born with an open abdominal wall, whose life-saving surgery was performed by doctors at the university, illustrating the advanced medical care delivered by its clinical teams.

The pages of SZEM also shine a spotlight on Katalin Karikó, the University of Szeged’s Nobel Prize-winning professor; on professor emerita Ilona Béládi, the first woman to head a department in the history of medical education in Szeged; and on the wide range of research and development activities supported by the university’s own AI-focused supercomputer.

The latest issue of SZEM is available across the University of Szeged’s buildings and can also be read online here.

We hope you enjoy reading SZEM – and find inspiration in it.
