European First Year Experience 2026: Empowering Students in Higher Education

In June 2026, the University of Szeged will host the European First Year Experience (EFYE) Conference – a leading international forum dedicated to redefining the first-year student experience in higher education. While the event brings together internationally recognized researchers, educators, and higher education professionals, it places students at the heart of its mission – with the conference program developed in partnership with them, shaped by their lived experiences, and guided by their insights.

What is EFYE?

The European First Year Experience (EFYE) Conference is a major international platform that brings together leading higher education experts from across Europe to examine how institutions can ensure a strong and successful transition into university life. Discussions address key challenges such as the future of European higher education, evidence-based approaches to reducing student attrition, and the development of comprehensive support systems that engage students from the very start of their academic journey.

The 2026 conference in Szeged moves beyond theoretical debate. Its organizers emphasize that student perspectives should not merely be reflected in data or case studies but recognized as an essential and active force in shaping both the program and the structure of the event itself.

What does EFYE offer students?

EFYE offers more than intellectual exchange – it provides a concrete professional development opportunity for the students involved in organizing the conference. For those joining the organizing team, the experience represents meaningful professional growth rather than a symbolic addition to a CV. Students gain first-hand insight into how an international academic network operates. They collaborate with experienced scholars and higher education professionals, develop organizational and project management skills, and contribute directly to coordinating a major international event. Through this work, they build lasting professional connections while acquiring practical competencies that remain valuable well after the conference concludes.

For students, serving on the organizing team brings tangible and measurable advantages:

Immersive project management experience: Contributing to the organization of a high-profile European conference places students in a real-world professional environment, where they refine their problem-solving abilities, strengthen teamwork skills, and learn to perform effectively under pressure.

Academic recognition: The University formally acknowledges students’ contributions, and participants may earn two academic credits for their work as members of the organizing team.

Language and intercultural competence: The conference’s international setting offers an excellent opportunity to further develop English-language proficiency while gaining first-hand insight into diverse professional cultures and working styles.

Interdisciplinary community: Reflecting the inclusive spirit of the program, students from all academic fields are encouraged to participate. This diversity enriches the team’s collective expertise and fosters meaningful cross-disciplinary collaboration.

How to join the organizing team

Students of the University of Szeged who are motivated to contribute to a dynamic, international project are invited to apply through the conference’s alternative internship program. Applications should be sent to horvath.lilla@szte.hu and must include a résumé (with photo) and a brief statement of motivation outlining the applicant’s interest in joining the organizing team.

The application deadline is March 3, 2026.

As the success of the conference depends on close coordination and effective teamwork, preference will be given to committed candidates who can remain flexible and fully available during the peak period of the event, from June 8 to 12, and who are prepared to participate actively on site.
