Bringing the World Together: Highlights from the 2025 International Cultural Event

On April 25, 2025, the University of Szeged hosted the highly anticipated International Cultural Event (ICE), an evening dedicated to celebrating the rich diversity of its student community. Now a well-established tradition, the event offered a vibrant platform for students from around the world to showcase their cultural heritage through performances and activities, reinforcing the profound impact of cultural exchange in uniting diverse communities.

A night of inspiration

The event was opened by Prof. Dr. Zoltán Kónya, Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs and Innovation at the University of Szeged, who welcomed the audience with an inspiring message. Reflecting on the words of Nobel Prize laureate Katalin Karikó, he shared an empowering quote: “Don't focus on what you cannot change. You just have to focus on what's next because that's what you can change.” He emphasized the importance of focusing on what can be achieved, highlighting that the evening was a celebration of the transformative power of change and the diversity that enriches global community.
“This is rainbow of cultures, and it is wonderful to witness such remarkable diversity,” Professor Kónya remarked, underlining the significance of events like ICE in fostering global unity.

Connecting worlds through culture

The Dean of the Szent-Györgyi Albert Medical School, Prof. Dr. Lázár György, also took the stage to highlight the value of cultural exchange. He noted, “ICE has become a tradition of Szeged. This evening is a special event – an opportunity to learn more about the national characteristics and cultures of all students. The future and the strength of the human race lie in diversity, and culture is the greatest power that binds us. Therefore, this night is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about each other.”

Lee Chang Yong, President of the International Student Union of Szeged, expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the event. Reflecting on his personal journey through seven different countries, he expressed his deep affection for Szeged, describing it as a place that offers both opportunity and a true sense of home.
“This event is a celebration of our connections – not barriers, but bridges,” he said.

Celebrating many cultures, one community

Botros Mekhael, Vice President of Student Affairs of the International Student Union of Szeged, expressed the significance of ICE in uniting the student community. “Not just a celebration, but a tradition that defines us as students of the University of Szeged. We are proud to be part of this community, which not only embraces diversity but provides a platform to express our cultures with pride, creativity, and respect,” Mekhael commented.

An evening of enchanting performances

The evening was marked by a compelling array of performances that highlighted the cultural richness of the students. A total of 14 performances captivated the audience, including:

  • ISUS Dance Team: Dance performance
  • Hungary: Folk dance
  • Lebanon: Music performances featuring singing, guitar, and the oud (a traditional Middle Eastern stringed instrument)
  • Iran: Performance on the tar (a traditional Persian instrument)
  • Indonesia: Dance and martial arts
  • Palestine: Music performance
  • Vietnam: Traditional dance
  • Egypt: Belly dancing performance
  • Nigeria: Dance performance
  • India: Dance group performance
  • Seychelles: Dance performance
  • Syria: Single-instrument concert
  • South Korea: Tae Kwon Do demonstration
  • Pakistan: Instrumental performance

Each performance was a celebration of cultural expression, bringing the audience closer to the rich traditions of each participating nation.

Tasting the world

At the close of the performances, attendees were invited to sample national dishes from each of the represented countries, offering a culinary journey that perfectly complemented the evening’s cultural showcase. The night concluded with a lively party, leaving participants with unforgettable memories of joy, unity, and the celebration of diversity.

The 2025 International Cultural Event in Szeged was yet another resounding success, demonstrating the power of culture to bring people together and celebrate what makes each of us unique. This growing tradition continues to foster a strong sense of belonging and connection among the university’s diverse student community.
