Of these, over 1,900 universities were ranked in 55 subject areas within the categories of life sciences, natural sciences, engineering, medical sciences, and social sciences.
The Global Rankings of Academic Subjects relies on the Web of Science publication database. Factors considered in the ranking include the number of scientific articles published in top-tier (Q1) journals for each field, citation impact, the proportion of publications co-authored with international partners, and high-profile publications in leading journals as well as presentations at the most prestigious conferences. The ranking also takes into account the number of professors and researchers recognized with notable awards.
