On the occasion of the European Mobility Week and Car-Free Day, the University of Szeged is organising a bike breakfast and a free bike service on Wednesday, 18 September 2024. For breakfsat, muesli bars, tea and apples will be offered, and also a free bike check-up will be available.

- For decades, the University of Szeged has placed great emphasis on promoting environmental awareness among university citizens. Over the years, the Institution has taken a number of steps that have made SZTE one of the greenest universities in Europe and the world for more than a decade. These have included the purchase of electric cars, the promotion of cycling mobility and the installation of bicycle storage facilities to support environmentally friendly transport. – said Dr. Dénes Mátyás. The Deputy Director for Sustainability at the University of Szeged and leader of the “Green SZTE” Development Programme added: the Institution is joining the European Mobility Week and Car-Free Day again this year, encouraging university and city citizens to use environmentally friendly transport.

On Wednesday, 18 September 2024, from 7:30 to 10:00 a.m., those who arrive by bike or scooter at the József Attila Study and Information Centre will be treated to a breakfast of muesli bar, apple and hot tea at Café TIK (while stocks last).

From 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., you can also ask for a bike check-up, thanks to Urban Legend Bicycle Shop and Service.

The European Mobility Week aims to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable urban transport. It encourages behavioural change in favour of active mobility, public transport and other clean, intelligent transport solutions.

The Car-Free Day started as a civil initiative in the French town of La Rochelle in 1997. The following year, the event was organised in many towns and cities across France and Italy, on September 22. The aim was to raise public awareness to support the protection of the environment and encourage people to try alternative modes of transport to reduce the pressures of increasing motor traffic. One of the long-term objectives of the event is to encourage people using cars to switch to alternative and sustainable modes of travel.
