Once again, SZTE is the greenest university

The University of Szeged remains the greenest higher education institution in Hungary. According to the 2019 GreenMetric world ranking, SZTE stepped ahead to the 74th place. Compared to last year, the number of international participants increased this year: in 2019, 780 institutions filled out the green questionnaire.

The University of Szeged stepped ahead from the 77th place to the 74th place in the 2019 GreenMetric World Ranking. Which continues to secure its position as the greenest university in Hungary. In this year's survey, 780 higher education institutions have been examined by the rank creators. The popularity of the Indonesian University top list is steadily increasing, with 95 institutions responding to the first call in 2010, and 780 universities in 2019.

Since its inception, the University of Szeged has been at the forefront of green universities. The institution has been performing worldwide since 2012 and is in the top 20% at European level. The proportion of universities overtaken by SZTE has improved from 86% to 90% last year.

The University of Szeged, with its 74th place and 7375 points, won the green competition of the 7 Hungarian higher education institutions that completed the questionnaire. In second place, the University of Pécs placed 100th in the international rankings, and the University of Debrecen ranked 202nd in the international list. There is a score difference of 350 points between SZTE and the second best Hungarian institution, and 5450 points compared to the last-ranked Hungarian university.


The six themes of the Green Questionnaire have remained the same for years: location and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water management, transport and education. Out of these themes, energy and climate change have the largest weigh of (21%) and water management the least (10%).

The University of Szeged continues to attach great importance to the intensive use of renewable energy sources, to the development of student-centred programs and to the reduction of energy demand. The goals for the next period include the development of e-mobility and the implementation of technical investments that will reduce the need for additional energy by using renewable energy sources.

In July 2019, GreenMetric ranking experts attended workshops and institutional visits organized by two of Hungary's greenest universities (SZTE and PTE), thus strengthening international cooperation in sharing good practices.
