The University of Szeged is one of Hungary’s leading and internationally ranked higher educational institutions. It was ranked as the highest among the Hungarian higher education institutions on the QS World University list. SZTE is the “greenest” Hungarian university and to sum it up, it is the best university in the country.
The University of Szeged has achieved excellent results in the most acknowledged international and national rankings.
QS University Rankings
SZTE is still at the first place amongst the Hungarian universities, as it received the distinguished 501–550th ranking in the British QS World University Rankings 2016/2017. According to this ranking, the University is in the top 13% out of the world’s higher educational institutions. More than 4000 institutions were considered and more than 900 were ranked. The assessment is based on six factors, such as academic and employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, the citation per faculty, the number of international faculty and international students.
On the updated list of subject ranking of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), University of Szeged appears amongst the world’s most elite universities with 7 disciplines.
The Faculty of Arts ranks between the world’s top universities by the fields of linguistic (151–200.), modern linguistic (201–250.) and English language and literature (251–300.)
The Faculty of Pharmacy has an excellent position between the top 151–200 by the field of pharmacy, the Faculty of Medicine ranks between the top 251–300 by the field of medicine, and the biological and chemical education of the Faculty of Science and Informatics kept their former positions among the 301-350.
It is an excellent result that the University of Szeged is ranked on the 15th place in QS EECA (Emerging Europe and Central Asia) ranking in 2016. This position is the best in Hungary.
CWUR and Times Higher Education Rankings
According to the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) , which includes the best 1000 higher educational institutions of the world, University of Szeged received a great place in 2016 - on this ranking SZTE is the 708th.
Among the Hungarian universities, the University of Szeged has a prestigious position in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2017: it is ranked among the top 601–800 of the world.
The University of Szeged possesses the 129th place on the Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies University Rankings 2017 – this result shows a slightly improvement compared to the 136th position previously. The ranking includes top 300 universities applying the same 13 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings in order to rank institutions by teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
Rankings of the scientific activity
The University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) ranking is compiled annually based on the number of academic articles and citations, academic activity and the total number of published studies conducted in collaboration with foreign universities. In 2016 the University of Szeged was ranked as 662nd.
The University of Szeged holds an important ranking position on the University of Leiden World Ranking in 2016. The CWTS Leiden Ranking ranks universities from all over the world with the largest contribution in international scientific journals. The ranking is based on data from the Web of Science bibliographic database produced by Thomson Reuters. University of Szeged has the 651st place on the list – which shows a strong improvement compared to earlier 703th position.
SZTE is positioned remarkably high in national ranking
According to HVG Higher Education Ranking 2016, the University of Szeged won the second place in the competition of universities in Hungary. With this result, it is the first in the region. The list ranks universities among others on the number of applicants indicating SZTE as their first choice, the average GPA of admitted students, the number of first year students who achieved outstanding results at academic competitions, the ratio of students and academic staff etc.
Environment consciousness and online visibility
University of Szeged is still the “greenest” Hungarian university according to UI Green Metric World Ranking. SZTE ranks 14th “greenest” in the world among the institutions located in city centres and is ranked 45th among Europe’s assessed universities. With its 5647 points, we are ranked 107th in overall world ranking in terms of sustainability. 516 universities participated in the latest assessment. The aim of ranking is to promote sustainability applied in universities and it uses a variety of indicators, for example electricity consumption, carbon footprint, water usage, waste management and offering courses related to environment.
Five Hungarian higher education institutions were included among the top one thousand universities of the World Ranking of Webometrics 2016. This rank is published by Cybermetrics Lab, a research group of the largest research institute of Spain, the Spanish National Research Council. The researchers have studied the web presence of more than 24,000 institutions twice a year to analyse the online “visibility” of the universities: the University of Szeged ranks 606th.
