University of Szeged is still the “greenest” Hungarian university according to UI Green Metric World Ranking. SZTE ranks 14th “greenest” in the world among the institutions located in city centres and is ranked 45th among Europe’s assessed universities.
Universitas Indonesia (UI) has just released the results of its GreenMetric Ranking of World Universities. 516 universities participated in the latest assessment. The aim of the ranking is to promote sustainability applied in universities and it uses a variety of indicators, for example electricity consumption, carbon footprint, water usage, waste management and offered courses related to the environment.
With its 5647 points the University of Szeged is ranked 107th in overall world ranking in terms of sustainability. In Europe it has the 45th position among the green universities and in Central Europe only Vienna and Prague has better results as Szeged.
Since the vast majority of the university's buildings are located in downtown Szeged SZTE is classified as one of the institutions in city center. According to this indicator, the University of Szeged is ranked 14th worldwide.
Results are partly due to the realization of environmentally conscious investments applying sustainable energy sources and protocols that lower the impact on the university environment. Such investments as the solar park – introduced as the first one among the Hungarian higher education institutions –, the heating and air conditioning system of József Attila Tanulmányi és Információs Központ (József Attila Study and Information Centre) partly powered by geothermal energy, the heat of wastewater all contributed to the excellent ranking.
Out of the 516 HE institutions 8 Hungarian universities provided data regarding the green indicators: Eötvös Lóránd University (ranked 204th), the University of Debrecen (ranked 311th ), the University of Pécs (ranked 355th), Szent István University (ranked 371st), Corvinus University of Budapest (ranked 399th), the University of Miskolc (ranked 414th) and Óbuda University (ranked 472nd) participated in the assessment in 2016.
