Szeged is chosen to be one of the most enriching and inspirational cities of Europe

We are happy to announce that Szeged is among the best European cultural and creative cities, listed on the Cultural and Creative Cities Monitor of the European Commission. The online platform is a new tool to monitor and assess the performance of 'Cultural and Creative Cities' in Europe vis-à-vis their peers.

Szeged is highlighted by its four cultural and creative features: its higher education institution: the University of Szeged, its Szeged Open-Air Festival, its TheAlter Festival and its cultural events organized by the Cultural Office of the Universit.

The University of Szeged as the regional centre of education and one of the most distinguished universities in Hungary attracts thousands of students - not only from Hungary but also from abroad.

Szeged Open-Air Festival, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary, has recently been awarded the label of Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe. Since 1931 the open air theatre festival is the chief tourist draw and the iconic event of the city.

TheAlter is the oldest international theatre festival in Hungary and a forum of independent and alternative theatres.

The cultural events organised by the university and sponsored by the city include the Autumn and Spring Festivals, where students and well-known artists demonstrate their talents.

SZTE Experience

The University of Szeged is a well-known and internationally ranked institution in Hungary and worldwide. It is such a wonderful experience to study here. Instructors are professionals and well-qualified; students are nice and open towards foreign cultures. Events organised by the faculties are pleasant and help with integration as well as provide the opportunity to get new acquaintances and friends.

I’m from Ecuador and a Ph.D. student from the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program. I first heard about the University of Szeged on the internet. The general study environment is nice and student life in the city is lovely. With my program and the academic system, I can control my time which is a plus. The city is very affordable, and I live in the city center. One of my favorite extra-curricular activities is the Hungarian cultural programs. I have so many favorite spots, but parks are top on the list. The professors and staffs are very approachable. The mentors and classmates also did an excellent job to explore and know the city better. I hope to continue my career as a professor, and I would recommend the university to friends because it is, in general, a beautiful place.
