NanoPlastHub is an interdisciplinary research platform established in 2024 at the University of Szeged, dedicated to the science-based investigation and management of micro- and nanoplastic contamination. Our mission is to examine, within a unified scientific framework, the detection, environmental distribution, biological mechanisms, physiological effects and regulatory implications of plastic particles in the submicron size range.
Nanoplastics represent one of the least explored yet potentially one of the most significant environmental risk factors. Due to their small size, they are capable of moving within complex systems, binding other contaminants and crossing biological barriers. However, the lack of reliable measurement methods, reference materials and mechanistic understanding currently hampers risk assessment and evidence-based regulation. One of the primary objectives of NanoPlastHub is to reduce this knowledge gap.
The activities of the center cover the entire scientific value chain: from the production of reference nano- and microplastic particles and the development of advanced detection methods, through the analysis of environmental samples and transport processes in soil and aquatic systems, to biological impact assessments in plant and animal models and ultimately the evaluation of health-related and regulatory consequences.
NanoPlastHub operates within a multidisciplinary structure, bringing together chemists, physicists, geoscientists, biologists, medical researchers, data scientists and legal experts to address the issue of nanoplastics as a complex system. The objective is not only to generate high-quality scientific publications, but also to establish a nationally and internationally recognized knowledge base capable of supporting the development of future environmental, agricultural, and health regulations.
In the short term, our focus is on integrating research capacities, harmonizing methodologies and training the next generation of researchers. In the medium term, our goal is to position NanoPlastHub as a leading Central European center in nanoplastic research, supported by strong international collaborations, large-scale research projects and active engagement with industry and regulatory authorities.
NanoPlastHub is committed to providing scientifically grounded answers to a global environmental challenge and to building bridges between fundamental research, applied technological development, and policy decision-making. In addition, NanoPlastHub provides comprehensive scientific consultancy and expert support in matters related to micro- and nanoplastic contamination, including research, industrial and regulatory aspects.
