Masterclasses at Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival

From July 23 to August 3, 2022 the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival will offer young musicians the possibility to study with internationally renowned artists at the Masterclasses at the Musichochschule Lübeck.

About the Masterclasses

For more than 30 years, internationally renowned artists and pedagogues have committed themselves to the advanced education of talented students in solistic manner as well as in chamber music. In the course of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, about 150 active participants arrive in Lübeck every summer to be taught by the grand masters of their instruments. Important musicians like David Geringas, Christoph Prégardien or Tabea Zimmermann along with other internationally reputated artists stay in the University of Music Lübeck for some time to pass on their experience and knowledge to the next generation. Major names of the classical world – e.g. Christiane Karg, Vilde Frang, Maxim Vengerov or VOCES8 have visited the Masterclasses at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival during their own studies. Some of them - as for example Jens Peter Maintz - return as renowned pedagogues.

The University of Music Lübeck, which consists of venerable and listed merchant and citizen’s houses, offers the ideal space for inspiring lessons and a concentrated working atmosphere. Besides perfect conditions for practicing, the participant‘s individual development will be encouraged by complementary workshops. The charming courtyards invite to sit down for pleasant hours after the concerts and offer an open space for artistic exchange.

The Masterclasses at Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival are open to the public. Everyone is invited to join as passive observer and gain insight into the daily musical work. Information concerning teaching times, guest tickets and concert tickets can be inquired at the office in the University of Music. At the end of each class, a concert will take place, where the students present the results of their intense work. The program arises from the artistic work of the respective course. The concerts take place either in the concert hall at the University of Music or in the course of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.

The personal commitment of private persons and institutions enables the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival to provide a limited number of scholarships for selected students. If you want to support a young musician on his way to an international career, you can do this in the framework of a sponsorship. Please contact us for further information.

The Masterclasses are sponsored by the Possehl Foundation Lübeck.

Registration open for SHMF Masterclasses!

The King's Singers, cellist Jens Peter Maintz, mezzo-soprano Brigitte Fassbaender, violinist Donald Weilerstein and violist Amihai Grosz will be passing on their knowledge to up-and-coming talents as teachers at this summer's SHMF Masterclasses. Applications are now open here.

The SHMF Masterclasses will take place from 23 July to 3 August 2022, supported by the Possehl-Stiftung Lübeck. For around 30 years, top-class artists have been intensively dedicating themselves to the next generation of musicians. The participants come from all over the world and find ideal rehearsal conditions in the beautiful ambience of the University of Music Lübeck. At the end of the public courses, master class concerts are held as part of the SHMF.

Cellist Jens Peter Maintz, sought-after soloist, chamber music partner and professor at the Universität der Künste Berlin, is part of the SHMF Masterclasses for the third time and teaches young cellists.

Brigitte Fassbaender began her career in 1961 at the Bavarian State Opera and has appeared on major stages such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York and La Scala in Milan. Today she works primarily as a director and teacher and passes on her knowledge to young singers in Lübeck.

Amihai Grosz comes from Israel and is principal violist with the Berlin Philharmonic. At the SHMF, he has already appeared on stage together with portrait artist 2019 Janine Jansen and is teaching his instrument for the first time at the masterclasses this year.

Donald Weilerstein is a guest at the SHMF Masterclasses for the fourth time. The violinist was a founding member of the renowned Cleveland Quartet in 1969 and has toured the world both with the ensemble and as a soloist. He is still a professor at the Juillard School in New York, among other places.

The King's Singers last coached young vocal ensembles at SHMF in 2018. The a cappella formation has been considered one of the best groups in the world for over 50 years, although it regularly rejuvenates itself: the current line-up of six singers has been working together since 2019 and covers a wide range of repertoire from Renaissance to pop and folk songs.

It is not only virtuosity that determines the success of a musician's career; skills that go beyond music are also necessary. For this reason, the SHMF Masterclasses offer workshops on mental training, dispokinesis and physiotherapy to also train the body-specific and mental skills of the participants. Young talents can apply for the Masterclasses until 30 April.
