The Phase I Site Tour was one of the highlights of the University of Szeged’s 12th Innovation Day, an event designed to strengthen the university’s role in the innovation ecosystem, expand industry collaborations, and promote research outcomes to a wider audience. Innovation Day also serves as a platform for disseminating the research outcomes generated at the university and facilitating knowledge transfer.
On November 6, 2024, Innovation Day opened to a full house with a welcome address by Prof. Dr. László Rovó, Rector of the University of Szeged. The day’s most memorable moments unfolded during Professor Katalin Karikó’s talk, in which she addressed questions from students, reflecting on the emotional and professional motivations that guided her research career. The audience expressed their admiration for the Nobel laureate with a standing ovation.
The event also included a presentation by László Bódis, Deputy State Secretary for Innovation at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, who announced that the University of Szeged had secured the highest number of winning innovation projects in the newly launched Neumann János Program, which allocates HUF 50 billion to support scientific innovations.
At the event, young researchers were encouraged by Prof. Dr. Gábor Szabó, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the University of Szeged, to always consider the societal utilization of their research. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Zoltán Kónya, Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs and Innovation, and Prof. Dr. Ildikó Csóka, Director-General for Strategy and Development, presented the Innovation Prizes and Proof of Concept grants to encourage and reward impactful research.
During the ceremony, Dr. Judit Fendler, Chancellor of the University of Szeged, praised the university’s wide-ranging economic partnerships, while Szabolcs Farkas, Head of the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office, revealed that, under a newly signed memorandum of understanding with the university, the office would offer enhanced support for researchers’ patent applications.
