About us

The Past

The predecessor of our Faculty, the Gyula Juhász Teacher Training College was established in 1873 in Budapest with the aim of training teachers for the contemporary elementary school system. This institution was Hungary’s oldest teacher training establishment.

Due to the educational reforms introduced by Kuno Klebelsberg, Minister of Culture, teacher training programs were transferred to Szegedin 1928. As a result of his reforms, Szeged became a city of students and a vibrant intellectual centre of South Eastern Hungary. In the decades that followed, the Hungarian educational system and teacher training underwent several changes.

In 1973, in the centennial year, the College was given the name of Szeged’s famous poet, Gyula Juhász.
