For the third year running, the University of Szeged has emerged as Hungary’s highest-ranked university in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), once again placing it among the world’s leading higher education institutions in one of the world’s most prestigious international academic rankings.
Published annually by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the Academic Ranking of World Universities is one of the world’s most respected benchmarks of academic and research performance. The 2026 edition ranks 1,000 universities selected from more than 2,500 higher education institutions evaluated worldwide.
In the 2026 ARWU ranking, the University of Szeged placed 519th worldwide, within the 501–600 band, retaining its position as Hungary’s highest-ranked university. Three other Hungarian institutions also secured places in the global top 1,000. The result further strengthens SZTE’s international standing, underscoring the quality and impact of its research and education, its presence in leading scientific publications, and its extensive network of international academic partnerships. These strengths are complemented by the University’s successful translation of scientific achievements into social and economic value.
ARWU ranks universities using six objective indicators of academic and research performance. These include the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal recipients among faculty members and alumni; the number of Highly Cited Researchers identified by Clarivate, a global research intelligence and analytics company; publications in Nature and Science; research articles indexed in Web of Science databases; and each institution’s per capita academic performance.
At the top of the global ranking, U.S. and UK universities continue to dominate. Harvard University leads the 2026 ARWU, followed by Stanford University in second place and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in third. Eight U.S. and two UK institutions make up the top 10, reflecting the continued strength of these two countries at the highest level of international higher education.
