The University of Szeged is set to retain its full membership in the EUGLOH European University Alliance, securing its place among Europe’s leading university networks and reaffirming its commitment to shaping the future of higher education. With funding confirmed for the 2027–2028 period, the alliance will expand opportunities for international collaboration while bringing new academic programs, research initiatives, mobility schemes, and student projects to the University of Szeged.
The University of Szeged has reached another important milestone following the European Commission’s announcement that the European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH) has successfully secured the funding needed to continue its work under the European Universities Initiative (EUI). The decision means that, as one of the alliance’s founding members, the University of Szeged will remain a full partner in one of Europe’s most significant university alliances in the years ahead, continuing to play an active role in shaping a knowledge community that is driving the future of higher education, research, and innovation. The University of Szeged has been awarded more than €262,000 in funding.
A European alliance of leading universities
EUGLOH brings together nine leading European universities, most of which rank among the world’s top higher education institutions. Alongside the University of Szeged, the alliance includes Université Paris-Saclay in France, Lund University in Sweden, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany, the University of Porto in Portugal, the University of Novi Sad in Serbia, the University of Alcalá in Spain, the University of Hamburg in Germany, and UiT The Arctic University of Norway.
The alliance is set to expand further in 2027, when the University of Amsterdam joins as its tenth member, strengthening EUGLOH’s reach and impact across Europe.
Together, EUGLOH’s member institutions form one of Europe’s largest interconnected academic communities, representing more than 338,000 students, 54,000 faculty members and researchers, and 112 faculties and academic institutions. Within this network, the University of Szeged ranks among the alliance’s top three institutions for mobility, underscoring its leading role in promoting international exchange and advancing the goals of the EUGLOH 2.0 initiative.
Building a shared European campus
EUGLOH is much more than a traditional university partnership. Together, its member institutions are working to create a shared European campus where students, researchers, and staff can learn, teach, work, and collaborate across institutional and national borders.
At the heart of this vision is global health – understood not simply as a medical concept, but as a broad, interdisciplinary approach to improving the well-being of individuals, societies, and the planet. Guided by this perspective, the alliance addresses some of the defining challenges of the 21st century, including:
- pandemics and emerging diseases,
- climate change and environmental risks,
- digital health,
- artificial intelligence,
- personalized medicine,
- and the health impacts of social inequalities.
Through interdisciplinary education, research, and innovation, EUGLOH aims to equip the next generation of professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to address these complex challenges and help build healthier, more resilient societies.
New opportunities for the University of Szeged
During the new EUGLOH 2Plus project period, the University of Szeged will remain an active full member of the alliance, contributing to:
- the development of joint European educational programs,
- the expansion of international research collaboration,
- increased mobility opportunities for students and staff,
- professional development programs,
- and new innovation-driven initiatives.
These activities will create even more international opportunities for the University of Szeged’s students, faculty, researchers, and administrative staff, while further strengthening SZTE’s global visibility, strategic partnerships, and competitiveness within the European higher education landscape.
Looking ahead: Shaping European higher education
The European Universities Initiative is one of the European Union’s flagship higher education programs, and the University of Szeged has been involved since 2018 as a founding member of EUGLOH. Today, 65 European university alliances operate across the continent, yet only 20 secured funding under the 2026 call for proposals – including EUGLOH. With a total budget of €145.6 million, the call provides each successful alliance with up to €7.2 million in funding over the next two years.
For the University of Szeged, the renewed funding represents more than financial support – it reflects the alliance’s achievements and recognizes the University’s valuable contribution to one of Europe’s most ambitious higher education initiatives. As EUGLOH enters its next chapter, the University of Szeged will continue working alongside leading European universities to expand international opportunities, strengthen research and innovation, and help shape a more connected, competitive, and resilient European Higher Education Area.
