The University of Szeged remains one of the world’s top universities in the latest QS World University Rankings. Placing within the top 10% of institutions worldwide, SZTE continues to hold a leading position among Hungarian higher education institutions.
One of the world’s most recognized higher education ranking organizations, UK-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), published its latest list of leading universities on June 18, 2026. The QS World University Rankings 2027 evaluated 8,808 institutions from 106 countries – around 340 more than in the previous edition. Only 1,504 universities secured a place in the prestigious ranking.
The University of Szeged continues to rank among the world’s best institutions, placing 633rd globally – a result that puts it within the top 10% of universities worldwide. At the national level, SZTE once again ranked among Hungary’s leading universities, securing third place among the ten Hungarian institutions included in the ranking. Hungary’s top three universities form a particularly close group: all are ranked between 590th and 640th worldwide, more than 100 places ahead of the remaining Hungarian institutions. Their overall scores differ by only 0.2 to 1.0 points, underscoring the exceptionally narrow gap separating Hungary’s leading universities.
This year’s global ranking is once again topped by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Imperial College London and Stanford University are tied for second place, followed by the University of Oxford, Harvard University, and the University of Cambridge.
QS evaluates universities worldwide using nine indicators: academic reputation (30%), citations per faculty (20%), employer reputation (15%), employment outcomes (5%), the proportion of international faculty and researchers (5%), the proportion of international students (5%), international research network (5%), faculty-student ratio (10%), and sustainability (5%).

The University of Szeged has also earned strong recognition in other major international rankings. On June 16, U.S. News & World Report published its 2026 Best Global Universities rankings, which likewise placed SZTE among the world’s top universities and confirmed its position among Hungary’s leading higher education institutions. Notably, the university achieved the highest ranking in Hungary in two disciplines: Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.
