Five fields, five standout performances on the global stage – and a top-two position in Hungary in every one of them. The University of Szeged has once again made a strong showing in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), published annually by ShanghaiRanking. In the latest edition, released on September 15, 2026, SZTE ranked among the world’s best universities in five academic fields, placing either first or second nationally in each.

SZTE achieved its most notable result in Human Biological Sciences, ranking first in Hungary and securing a place among the world’s top 300. The University also reached the global top 300 in
Clinical Medicine and Dentistry & Oral Sciences. Nationally, SZTE ranked second outright in Clinical Medicine and joint second in Dentistry & Oral Sciences.
SZTE’s success extended beyond these three fields. In both Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and Education, the University ranked in the 301–400 range worldwide. It also placed second nationally in both fields – jointly in Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and outright in Education.
The scale of the ranking puts SZTE’s results in a broader international context. For its 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, ShanghaiRanking evaluated around 2,000 leading higher education institutions from nearly 100 countries across 57 subjects spanning Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects draws on Web of Science publication data to assess research quality and international collaboration. Its indicators include publications in Q1 journals, citation impact, international co-authorship, papers published in prestigious journals and presented at leading conferences, as well as major awards and distinguished professional achievements among faculty members and researchers.
Measured against these demanding criteria, SZTE’s success across five fields reflects both the quality and international reach of its research, reinforcing the University’s presence on the global academic stage and providing a strong foundation for further success.
