
Following her hearing before the Committee on Justice and Constitutional Affairs on May 12 and the presentation of her ministerial commission, Prof. Dr. Márta Görög, alumna of the University of Szeged, officially took the oath of office as Hungary’s Minister of Justice. The University of Szeged community proudly congratulates the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences on this distinguished appointment and wishes her every success in her new role.
Through decades of distinguished service as an educator, researcher, and academic leader, Professor Márta Görög has made an outstanding contribution to Hungarian legal scholarship and higher education. Her professional dedication, scholarly excellence, and commitment to strengthening the academic community represent enduring values for our university.
Professor Görög’s professional journey is deeply rooted in the University of Szeged’s Faculty of Law and Political Sciences. From the earliest stages of her university studies, she distinguished herself through exceptional talent. She earned her law degree summa cum laude from the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of SZTE’s predecessor institution, József Attila University, and brought the same standard of excellence to her academic career. She later completed both her PhD and habilitation with the highest distinction, laying the foundation for a scholarly and teaching career that has since earned her national and international recognition.
Professor Márta Görög began her academic career at the institution as an assistant professor and later served as associate professor, full professor, and head of institute before assuming leadership of the Faculty as Dean in 2019. Her leadership has been defined by scholarly rigor, community-building, and a deep commitment to education. As an educator, she has introduced generations of students to the foundations of civil law while becoming a respected mentor and role model for students and colleagues alike.
Professor Görög’s contributions to scholarship and public life are equally remarkable. As an active member of several bodies of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, co-chair of the Legal Committee of the Hungarian Accreditation Committee, and a respected voice in Hungary’s legal and academic communities, she has helped shape the field well beyond the University of Szeged. Through her international professional network and scholarly achievements, she has further elevated the global visibility and recognition of Hungarian civil law scholarship.
Professor Görög’s achievements have been honored with numerous prestigious distinctions, including the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary, the Golden Cross of Merit of Hungary, the Gyula Moór Award, and the Prima Award. These recognitions stand as a testament to the far-reaching significance of her scholarly, educational, and public service contributions. In addition, her exceptional dedication to students is reflected in her mentoring programs and personal guidance, which have earned recognition both in Hungary and internationally.
In Professor Márta Görög, we celebrate a scholar, educator, and leader whose decades of work have advanced legal scholarship while setting a compelling example of humanity, professional integrity, and community-building. Through her dedication and leadership, she has become a source of inspiration to colleagues, students, and the wider legal profession.
