On July 1, 2026, Associate Professor Dr. Danica Varga-Matusovits took office as dean of the University of Szeged’s Faculty of Dentistry. A highly respected clinician, educator, and researcher, she has been a prominent member of the faculty community for many years. She brings to her new position extensive experience in patient care, education, and research.

Dr. Danica Varga-Matusovits earned her medical degree from Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical University, the predecessor of the University of Szeged’s medical school. Alongside her medical studies, she completed a program in English–Hungarian medical translation. As a student, she developed a strong commitment to promoting interdisciplinary collaboration between medicine and dentistry – a perspective that has continued to shape her professional career.

Dr. Varga-Matusovits obtained specialist qualifications in Dentistry and Oral Diseases in 2005, Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics in 2007, and Dentoalveolar Surgery in 2010. She earned her PhD in 2010 and completed her habilitation in 2024. In recognition of her outstanding contribution to education, the University of Szeged presented her with its Teacher of the Year Award in 2024.

Throughout her career, Dr. Danica Varga-Matusovits has held a range of academic and clinical leadership positions at the Faculty of Dentistry. She has worked at both the Department of Prosthodontics and the Department of Oral Biology and Experimental Dental Research. Since January 1, 2023, she has served as director of the Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery at the University of Szeged’s Albert Szent-Györgyi Clinical Center. On July 1, 2023, she also became head of the Department of Oral Surgery.

As dean, Dr. Danica Varga-Matusovits aims to build on the Faculty’s strengths by combining a strong clinical perspective with research-driven, student-centered education. Her program sets out ambitious goals for education, research, financial management, and human resources, all closely aligned with the University’s strategic priorities and designed to further strengthen the Faculty’s national and international reputation.

Building on its strong professional foundations, the University of Szeged’s Faculty of Dentistry is beginning a new chapter under the leadership of Dr. Danica Varga-Matusovits, Dean of the Faculty. She is joined by three vice-deans: Associate Professor Dr. Márk Antal, who oversees general affairs, strategy, and development; Associate Professor Dr. István Pelsőczi-Kovács, whose portfolio covers academic and educational affairs; and Professor Dr. Anikó Pósa, who is responsible for the Faculty’s research and financial affairs.

Drawing on the Faculty’s rich traditions and established strengths, the new leadership is setting a clear course for the future. By further advancing student-centered education, fostering research excellence, and strengthening the academic community, the University of Szeged’s Faculty of Dentistry is well positioned to consolidate its standing as a leading center for dental education and research in Hungary and internationally.
