
3D printing has evolved far beyond its original role in industrial prototyping and is now playing an increasingly important role in healthcare. Its applications range from medical education and surgical planning to the development of personalized medical technologies. This rapidly evolving field was the focus of the hybrid course Additive Manufacturing and Its Relevance in Healthcare, organized by the University of Szeged.
As part of the EUGLOH Alliance's educational offering, Additive Manufacturing and Its Relevance in Healthcare, a multi-week hybrid course organized by the University of Szeged, was offered to partner institutions across the Alliance, attracting an international group of 17 students and faculty members from seven European universities representing a wide range of academic disciplines.

The program included a variety of social events.
The course began with online lectures introducing participants to the fundamentals of additive manufacturing, the potential of bioprinting, the role of medical imaging and digital design, and the regulatory and ethical aspects of healthcare applications. Experts from the University of Porto, Lund University, and the University of Vienna also contributed to the program, giving participants an international perspective on the latest developments and research in medical 3D printing.

Following the spring online sessions, participants gathered in Szeged for the in-person phase of the course between May 18 and 22, 2026. Working in teams under expert mentorship, they developed project concepts addressing a range of healthcare challenges. The week also featured a visit to the University of Szeged’s 3D Center as well as an international professional webinar, both providing participants with first-hand insight into the practical applications of additive manufacturing. Alongside the academic activities, social events offered valuable opportunities to build personal connections and expand international professional networks. The course concluded with team presentations showcasing each group’s proposed solutions, demonstrating one of the program’s central messages: additive manufacturing is not merely a technological innovation, but an interdisciplinary tool capable of addressing complex healthcare challenges.
